WorldPride Welcome Center Associate

Position Summary

This is a part-time, temporary position. The position reports to the WorldPride Welcome Center Manager and assists in driving sales of NYC Pride merchandise, promoting NY State tourism, and maintaining the daily operation of the Welcome Center. The associate will play a vital role in creating a friendly experience for all visitors to the Welcome Center, many of whom will be traveling from all over the world to celebrate WorldPride.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create a friendly, accessible, and fun environment for Welcome Center visitors by providing outstanding customer service, from the moment a guest enters the store through to the point of purchase.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of available products available in the Welcome Center, including clothing apparel and digital content.
  • Gain a deep understanding of NY State tourism offerings in order to answer visitor inquiries and provide helpful suggestions.
  • Make sure tourism pamphlets and other marketing collateral are stocked at all times.
  • Work alongside the Welcome Center Manager to identify opportunities to boost sales.
  • Meet daily sales goals by cross selling product offerings to customers.
  • Maintain the physical appearance of the store by periodically stocking and tidying fixtures per store procedures so that all presentations are appealing.
  • Ensure kiosks and screens are in good working order, reporting issues to the Welcome Center Manager when issues arise so that they can be handled in a timely matter.
  • After WorldPride, continue to educate customers on the history of NYC Pride and the Stonewall movement, as well as various NY State tourism initiatives.

Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills Required

  • An Associate’s degree or high school diploma.
  • Two or more years of retail sales and/or tourism industry experience.
  • Familiarity with point of sale (POS) systems.
  • Maintain a friendly, personable, and professional demeanor at all times. Position will have constant contact with the public, as well as frequent interactions with volunteers and sponsors of NYC Pride.
  • Empathy and tact to turn a frustrated customer into a happy one through your natural problem solving skills.
  • A high level of attention to detail in order to maintain presentation standards.
  • Remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and to lift objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Availability to work days, nights and weekends as the Welcome Center will be a seven day per week operation.
  • A strong personal work ethic and enthusiastic commitment to the mission of NYC Pride and the Stonewall movement.
  • Bilingual Spanish a plus!

Work Conditions

The work requires moderate physical exertion, including: bending, kneeling, stooping/standing, and lifting/moving heavy objects.

The work takes place in a retail setting. The work entails some exposure to cold, heat, and varied weather conditions as a result of delivery management.

The Welcome Center is open daily and requires frequent daytime/evening/weekend work. Some holiday work is required.
